Unfamiliar with Lisbon, I opted for accommodations in Belém, which is a bit outside downtown Lisbon but central to the areas I planned on visiting during my three day adventure. Belém is a charming and peaceful area, situated near the water and offering an abundance of cultural sites and museums. If you have access to a data plan while in Lisbon, then definitely take advantage of the affordable Uber rides as it's by far the most convenient means of transportation.
Neurotic and marked by FOMO, I always whip up an in-depth itinerary with points of interest, activities, time frames, etc. and follow it loosely making adjustments as needed. I'm always an over aggressive tourist on the first morning in a new place, so my morning went something like this: Belém Tower, the cloister of Jeronimos Monastery and Monument to the Discoveries. If you make it to Belém, don't skip these sites!
When visiting Lisbon, devouring pastéis de nata is a right of passage, so much so that they were even distributed as snacks by local airlines in the place of more traditional peanuts or pretzels. These mouthwatering Portuguese custard filled tarts taste like the amalgamation of creme brûlée and pie. Needless to say, I taste tested multiple pastéis de nata from various vendors for the sake of "research."
Internet buzz will tell you that the iconic Pasteis de Belém offers the best pastéis de nata, but personally, I recommend skipping their line and opting for the custard tarts at Manteigaria in the Time Out Market Lisboa. An added perk is that Manteigaria rings a bell to alert patrons when their pastries are fresh out the oven.
Regardless, the Time Out Market is a must-see attraction if you're a foodie or just plain hungry. This trendy marketplace features dozens of vendors with typical Portuguese foods and products in a fun atmosphere, but beware, it does get overcrowded especially during lunch time.
After meandering through the downtown area, I rode the the Santa Justa Lift to find this breathtaking view of the city. Lisbon is an impressive city with the power to lift spirits. I wonder why I never visited before, but I'm sure I will be back again in the future.
